Punch-Drunk Love is a different animal altogether. But the style of the movie often has it feeling like a musical is about to break out at any moment.
The scene where Sandler and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman get into a screaming match with each other goes over the top, well past legitimately threatening, landing squarely in the absurd. They show the early evolution of a filmmaker who was about to make his most widely acclaimed work.
