The ad campaign and soft drink were developed in an attempt to corner the male diet soft drink market. According to USA Today , it "was developed after the company's research found that men shy away from diet drinks that aren't perceived as "manly" enough. Then again, does simply saying "it's not for women" actually increase the manliness factor of a diet soft drink?

Is there a manliness factor for something like Dr. Pepper in the first place? Pepper really appealing to men here, or are they just having fun and looking for a lot of free media attention? After all, here I am posting the ad for free and so are countless other websites and blogs. The above spot is so silly it plays more like a parody of machismo than the real thing.

Jim Trebilcock, executive vice president of marketing for Dr Pepper, has said that "women get the joke" but since nobody is quite sure what the joke is in the first place, this might be a tough claim to make.
