Fostering Assessment Process. It can only take 4 months to be a UK foster carer! Step one: Simply Fostering Enquiry Form If you decide to complete our enquiry form, you will receive information packs from the most suitable Fostering Agencies in your area. You will also receive the free Simply Fostering Handbook Step two: Home Visit by the Fostering Agency Following the initial visit and the decision to proceed, the Fostering Agency social worker will arrange to start your assessment.

Step three: Fostering Assessment Process The assessment will involve about twelve home visits from the assessing social worker who will also visit your referees and any other relevant people. The process is an enjoyable experience however it can be demanding and feel intrusive at times. You will need to attend our journey to foster preparation course. This will give you a full understanding of the fostering role and get you thinking about how you would react to some of the situations you may find yourself in as a foster parent.

One of our independent assessors will contact you to arrange to start your fostering assessment. They will visit your home generally times to get to know you, your family and any skills and experience you have that will help you with fostering.

This information will be put together in a report. They will make a recommendation to the Key Assets Provincial Director. The Director will make the final decision about your approval as a foster parent. These include:. They are there to keep all your paperwork safe and confidential, along with giving you any advice you may need along the way.

This will be things like past employment, home addresses and details of people you will want to give you a personal reference. This can be friends or family. Being prepared for fostering is very important. This is why we run a 3-day Skills to Foster course that equips you with the knowledge and confidence to welcome your first foster child in your home.

You will be part of a group that is led by one of our Compass trainers, a qualified Compass Social Worker and one of your local Compass foster parents.

The course aims to provide a safe and fun space for you to get to know other carers in your area going through the same process, learn and hear about the experiences of our insightful staff.

How long does it take to be a foster parent? We could almost say how long is a piece of string. We will always aim to get you through the process as quickly as we are able to. It will take teamwork from you with your availability along with our teams to keep your assessment on track. The fostering process can seem daunting, and sometimes it may feel like it has gone on for a long while.
